| Bangladesh Captain Tamim Iqbal Shocks Cricket World with Unexpected Retirement Before CWC23 |
In a surprising announcement, Bangladesh's cricket team captain, Tamim Iqbal, has decided to retire from international cricket, dealing a major blow to the team just three months before the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India. After a 16-year-long international career, Iqbal made the announcement during a press conference in Chattogram, following Bangladesh's loss to Afghanistan in the first ODI of a three-match series.
Speaking emotionally to the media, Iqbal stated, "This is the end for me. I have given my best. I have tried my best. I am retiring from international cricket from this moment." With over 15,000 runs in international cricket, including 25 centuries and 94 half-centuries, Iqbal has had a remarkable career. He made his international debut in 2007 and represented Bangladesh in 70 Tests, 241 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. It's worth noting that he had already retired from T20I cricket last year and played his last Test match against Ireland in April.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has yet to announce a successor for Tamim Iqbal as the captain of the national team in the 50-over format. This unexpected retirement puts the team in a challenging position as they prepare for the upcoming Cricket World Cup.
