Despite performing poorly in the top four, England are strong favorites to defeat Ireland.
From Logan van, Beek's snake-hipped celebrations as the Netherlands qualified for the Super 12s to India's thrilling victory over Pakistan at a fever-pitched MCG, an early exit for two-time champion West Indies, and New Zealand's dismantling of defending champions Australia, this T20 World Cup has already produced some notable twists and turns. But it is difficult to imagine England vs. Ireland straying too far from the path.
In their opening game against Afghanistan, England struggled. Chasing just 113, they were 65 for 3 in the 11th over and eventually won by five wickets, thanks in large part to Sam Curran's excellent death bowling, which saw him take 5 for 10 in 3.4 overs. Ireland, who eliminated West Indies with a decisive nine-wicket victory to go to the first round for just the second time in their history, lost their first Super 12s match by the same margin to Sri Lanka after being outplayed.
The top four batsmen for England failed to reach the 20-run mark against Afghanistan, as the team only got seven boundaries overall off the bat, including three in five deliveries for No. 5 Liam Livingstone. To support Curran's diamond run, however, seamers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes continued to make solid progress on their individual injury comeback trails. Ireland opener Paul Stirling looks in decent touch with an unbeaten 66 against West Indies and 34 from 25 balls as his team's second-highest scorer behind Harry Tector's 45 against Sri Lanka, but both will need more against England.
These teams have only ever met in a T20I match, which was washed out in the fourth over of Ireland's run chase at the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 in Guyana with eventual champions England trying to hold off a meager 120 for 8 and escape elimination in the first round. Ireland has defeated them twice in one-day internationals (ODIs), including at the 2011 World Cup in India, but England is still the favorite after overcoming Australia 2-0 (their last game was postponed) and Pakistan 4-3 just before the event.

On Australian soil, Alex Hales has a great chance to recover the form that was essential to his selection for England after three years on the bench. His first international game since March 2019 marked the beginning of his comeback with a half-century against Pakistan in Karachi last month. Hales struck 84 in the first of three matches with the hosts after returning to Australia, where he had compiled 11 fifties and a ton in 45 games for Sydney Thunder during that period in the Big Bash League.
But since then, he has scored 4, 0, 9 (against Pakistan in Brisbane for the World Cup warm-up), and 19 (against Afghanistan for England's tournament debut). Hales averages 23.70 with a strike rate of 137.9 and two fifties in the 10 T20Is he has played since making his return to international play, compared to a lifetime average of 29.85 and a strike rate of 136.80 with 10 fifties and a century. Returning to a routine in the following game might put Ireland and the teams who come after it in jeopardy.
The quick-fire 37 off 23 balls Andy Balbirnie scored against the West Indies gave some indication that the Ireland captain would be crucial to the success of his team in this competition. But it's his only notable inning since a fifty-six followed by 46 against Afghanistan at home in August.
His desire to dig deep for a big innings may be piqued by four single-figure scores, including one against Sri Lanka, during a span where he has hitherto failed to pass 15. Balbirinie and Stirling can create a powerful alliance, as England found out during their 50-over match at Southampton in 2020. Reprise that sort of stand and anything can happen.
